Disadvantages of Using Ready-Made Themes for Your Website

Setting up a website these days is a breeze. Unlike in the past when domain names were quite expensive (and sometimes restricted), anyone can register a domain name, buy hosting services, and set up their site. And as more and more website themes and templates are becoming abundant, it can be tempting for a rookie blogger or webmaster to give in and use them.

But the question is, should you use these ready-made themes and templates? The answer is a resounding no, and here's why.

1. Not original
While it's true that themes can make blogging easier and more convenient, you run the risk of bumping into another site with the same theme. Therefore, as much as you want to make your site as original as possible (so it can stand out), you won't achieve this objective unless you hire a web design specialist to create a unique website for you.

2. Not appropriate for your blog
There are hundreds (or probably thousands) of ready-made templates that you can get download and install for free. But only a few of them actually embody the essence of your blog. Try scouring the Internet for that one perfect them, and the tendency is, you'll be spending hours in front of your screen and will end up not satisfied.

3. Not really free
Many themes offered for free always come with a catch. For instance, you won't get footer links unless you upgrade. Also, many hosts of these themes won't allow you to customize their templates unless you pay the required amount.

4. Encrypted
Did you know that some theme developers discreetly encrypt their themes so they can increase their ranking in Google and other search engines? That's right. You might be putting years of effort on your site to achieve a high PR, but there is someone tagging along with you.

These days, if you want to seriously earn from your blog, you need to invest not just in content but also in the aesthetics of your site. In other words, do not forget to invest in the design of your website. Readers are now very picky, and the first thing that turns them on (or off) would be how your website looks. While it's true that themes and templates are very easy and convenient to use, using them will not do you any good in the long run. So hire the best web design specialist and have him create the best, original, and unique look for your website.

  2. Ready-made templates are helpful, especially for first time bloggers. You can use this while you're still studying HTML and CSS features. You can change your theme after learning web design or when you already have a theme for your site. :)
